There are several ways your body may be telling you that you are not healthy.

You have a low grade fever. Fevers often accompany infections and are part of your body’s natural defense against them. Body temperature can also be elevated by physical activity and environmental factors, such as wearing heavy clothing or a high ambient temperature. A low-grade fever may also occur following immunizations, during teething, or as a symptom of cancer or inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. It can also occur as a side effect of some medications.

You are extremely thirsty. Causes may include:

  • A recent salty or spicy meal
  • Bleeding enough to cause a large decrease in blood volume
  • Diabetes
  • Diabetes insipidus
  • Medicines such as anticholinergics, demeclocycline, diuretics, phenothiazines
  • Loss of body fluids from the bloodstream into the tissues due to conditions such as severe infections (sepsis) or burns, or heart, liver, or kidney failure
  • A mental disorder called psychogenic polydipsia

The palms of your hands are red (PE) . PE can be caused by a wide variety of diseases. Liver disease is a common cause. Up to a quarter of people with liver cirrhosis; can manifest PE. PE has been reported in more than 60% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. A fifth of people with hyperthyroidism (elevated thyroid levels) have PE. PE occasionally occurs in patients with diabetes mellitus. Several drugs can cause PE. The more common offenders include; amiodarone, gemfibrozil, cholestyramine, topiramate, and albuterol. Fifteen percent of patients with cancer either originating in the brain or spreading to the brain will have PE. Smoking and chronic mercury poisoning are environmental causes of PE.

The whites of your eyes are not white and clear. When your eyes develop a yellowish appearance, it might be a sign of a serious disease that should not be ignored. You are not sleeping well. Common conditions often associated with sleep problems include heartburn, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders, kidney disease, mental health problems, neurological disorders, respiratory problems, and thyroid disease. You have a decreased appetite and/or losing weight. Causes of loss of appetite may include pregnancy, metabolic problems, chronic liver disease, COPD, dementia, HIV, hepatitis, hypothyroidism, chronic kidney failure, heart failure, cocaine, heroin, speed, chemotherapy, morphine, codeine, and antibiotics.

Your urine is a dark yellow. Dark urine is most commonly due to dehydration. However, it may be an indicator that excess, unusual, or potentially dangerous waste products are circulating in the body. For example, dark brown urine may indicate liver disease due to the presence of bile in the urine. Bloody, or reddened urine is an indication of other potential problems, including direct injury to the kidneys. If constipation is already present, drinking more liquids might not relieve it. However, regularly drinking plenty of water reduces the risk of constipation. Many sodas and drinks contain caffeine which can cause dehydration and worsen constipation.
